Black foam core boards are often used for photography or different art paintings. Another activity in which black foam boards are good is for crafting projects. Typically, there aren’t many suppliers that can sell black foam boards at reasonable prices and quantities, but rather try to sell them at over price and only in large quantities. Black foam board panels aren’t very cheap, thus not anyone can afford them; this article’s here to show you how to build your own black foam core board for a fraction of the actual cost.

A way to make black foam core boards at home is to simply purchase any type of foam core boards you can get yours hands on, may they be styrofoams or blown urethane. The way you would want to go about this would be to purchase some cheap latex paint - any color will do - and simply paint the foam board using a roller. After you’re done painting your foam board, you can glue them together using some silicone sealant.

Black foam core boards are good for virtually any type of mounting - including floating art in dimensional framing.

One of the reasons why foam cutting is almost an art is because foam core boards are hard to cut, their foam core structure makes it this hard. Usually, using a foam core cutter is ideal, the only problem that occurs is where to find such a tool. A foam core cutter is usually made out of cutting blade and a piece of wood, or more commonly found foam core cutters are made out of a plastic holder and a cutting blade.

The purpose of this article is to illustrate how a foam core cutter can be made using a simple piece of wood, a Swann-Morton 10A blade and three brass pins.

For this homemade foam core cutter a piece of wood with the dimensions of 19mm x19mm x130mm was used, but you should note that this isn’t really the most important part of the foam core cutter but the positioning of the blade is. An ideal foam core cutter cuts in such a way that only the lower layer of paper will be left untouched.

How to build a cheap foam core cutter

1. Purchase a piece of wood, a Swann-Morton 10A blade and some brass pins.

2. Start by positioning the blade on the wood and inserting the lower brass pin in such a way that the blade will be held in place and can’t be removed in any way.

3. Measure the angle and position the blade with two more brass pins in such a way that the blade is properly held in place; only the upper part can pass through the brass pin.

4. In the above picture, the piece of paper you see under the cutting blade has the same height as a default foam core board and it was placed in such a way that only the lower paper layer will be left untouched. For a proper placement of the blade, I recommend you do the same thing.
